The Fellowship proudly bears the name of William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley (1520–1598) — principal advisor to Queen Elizabeth I and one of the most influential architects of early modern England’s financial, administrative, and trade infrastructure.
As Lord High Treasurer, Burghley was instrumental in guiding the Crown’s economic policy and diplomatic strategy during a formative period for England’s emergence on the global stage. He was not merely a minister of state, but a pioneer of strategic intelligence,
long-range planning, and evidence-based governance — traits that define the ethos of this Fellowship.
“We named the Fellowship after William Cecil, Lord Burghley, because he exemplified what we most require from our Fellows today: intelligence, discretion, diligence, and a long-range understanding of economic affairs.”
